Veteran Southport journalist Martin Hovden writes: With less than 24 hours before polling stations open, a respected opinion polling organisation today (Wednesday) predicts a tough fight down to the wire between the Tories and Labour in tomorrow’s general election.
Political pundits in recent weeks have been predicting a comfortable majority for Prime Minister Boris Johnson with his Get Brexit Done mantra. However, Yougov claim he is on course for a much smaller majority, perhaps even leading to another hung parliament.
As for Southport where Tory Damien Moore (pictured) defends a 2,900 majority, Yougov predicts he will retain the seat, dashing the hopes of Labour’s Liz Savage and Liberal Democrat John Wright.
YouGov correctly called 93% of seats in 2017 and their poll today shows that a small Conservative majority is likely.
The forecast suggests the race has tightened since their last poll on November 27 which showed the Tories on course for a majority of 68.
YouGov now predicts the Conservatives will win 339 seats (up by 22), with Jeremy Corbyn’s party on 231 (down 31) – in terms of seats won this would be Labour’s worst performance since 1983. The Liberal Democrats are predicted to win 15 seats (up 3).
YouGov warned that the margin of error could put the Tory seat total as low as 311, which would mean another hung parliament.
It should be noted that many opinion polls got it wrong in the 2017 election, so there’s all to fight for tomorrow.
Whatever your view, don’t waste your vote on Thursday (December 12). Polling stations are open from 7am-10pm.
