If you follow Woodlands Animal Sanctuary on social media you may have seen that they have a wonderful older cat who they lovingly call Princess. Well, they also have a cat who the whole team have unanimously called ‘the best cat in the world’!
Who is the lucky recipient of this title we hear you ask; his name is Mikey and he has been at the animal sanctuary since last December. Mikey arrived at the sanctuary with his friend Johnathan, but he has since found his loving forever home.
Mikey and Johnathan came to the sanctuary due to the ill health of their owner but it was soon after admission that concerns were raised about Mikey’s health. Estimated at being in his teens, it was noticed that Mikey was drinking and urinating excessively which immediately rang alarm bells with the experienced team. Mikey was therefore held back from being re-homed until the cause was known.
After a few tests it was determined that Mikey is in fact extremely diabetic and since then the dedicated team have been working on getting his insulin levels right before re-homing him. With all the TLC Mikey has received he has come on leaps and bounds and the team finally feel like they have found the ideal dosage for him.
Mikey is on injectable insulin which is given at 12 hourly intervals – 9:30am and 9:30pm, currently. He is also on a diabetic dry food diet which he absolutely loves and always had 2 topped up water dishes. This routine will need to be continued when he does go to his own forever loving home.
At the sanctuary Mikey is everyone’s favourite old man, and he (and the animal carers & cat cuddlers too) loves nothing more than sitting on your lap and having a snooze or watching the world go by from his pen. He loves being picked up and cuddled to death, and to top it off he is a model patient for his insulin injections. The charity’s team are hoping that this will give his prospective special family the confidence they may need to be able to give him the injections themselves. As much support as needed will be given by Woodlands to the right home for Mikey, so that they do feel confident enough to do the injections. The caring team say “He doesn’t have a bad bone in his body, now he just needs a lovely family home who will love him as much as we do.”
As with all the cats available for rehoming from Woodlands, Mikey is neutered, up to date with vaccinations and is microchipped. As Mikey’s diabetes medication is for the rest of his life, Woodlands will pay for that indefinitely and they just insist that Mikey be taken back regularly to them, so they can check his glucose levels to ensure the medication is the best dose possible for him. Mikey’s lucky new parents will be given insulin and needles to take home with them, but all of this information will be discussed in detail prior to any agreement by the sanctuary for him to be rehomed.
