The fans with Arsenal tickets hoped the concluded season would be the year the Gunners got their long-awaited Premier League title.
Regrettably, Manchester City emerged triumphant, leaving Mikel Arteta and the hopeful fans with Arsenal tickets to ponder over another year without a silverware.
Just like the previous season, when Arsenal was all out in getting the best talent on the Summer transfer market, Arteta is again looking for reinforcements to help him win a league.
With the transfer window open and Arsenal confident of strengthening their side before the end of this summer market, plenty of deals have yet to be done.
A quiet start to this buying and selling period has not inspired much confidence or excitement from supporters so far, but with how the club has handled its moves in previous summers and its subsequent rise to established title challengers, there is no need for panic just yet.
The club is keen to reinforce in multiple areas and will be aided by the expected outgoings, which sporting director Edu will also oversee, with newly promoted managing director Richard Garlick supporting. With such mystery about where the window will go for Arsenal, it has left the door open for plenty of speculation.
With that in mind, the Gunners also have some deadweight to let go this season to make way for new talent.
Here’s how we see the sales are going to look like.
Sell-list
There is a whole host of candidates for whom Arsenal might and should sell this summer, from Eddie Nketiah to Charlie Patino, but picking players not necessarily being spoken about as potential exits, therefore, becomes tricky.
The first is Fabio Vieira, who has not established himself in the squad in his two seasons at the club, with injuries hampering his availability.
However, what he has shown is that Premier League football is undoubtedly a challenge for some to adapt to, and this is what, after just two years, means the ruthlessness that Mikel Arteta has shown should fall on the Portuguese player, and reported interest from former side Porto should probably be entertained.
The second is the most tricky, but Emile Smith Rowe, in a similar role to Vieira, is the second. A generational talent, as accredited by those with Arsenal tickets, but unfortunately did not have the luck of fitting in.
It’s tough to say goodbye to, especially should he leave for another Premier League side. However, with Vieira and Smith Rowe out, it could open the door to a talented attacking midfielder and much better competitor to Martin Odegaard, but more on that later.
New Signings
Arsenal 1 has needs in many areas, but the player who impressed me most at the Euros has quickly become one of the keenest targets: Marc Guehi.
Despite England’s underwhelming displays in their opening two matches at the Euros, Guehi has been the most consistently impressive across both games. Should Jakub Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko leave this summer, getting more defensive reinforcement will be key at this level, and the Crystal Palace man would be perfect to compete with William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.
Returning to the attacking midfield, my pick to bring in quality competition is RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo.
Despite not starting for Spain, he remains one of the best-attacking midfielders in the Bundesliga and could leave the German side this summer. A switch to Arsenal and the versatility he brings at just 26 years of age could be perfect.
Red Flags
Considering the size of a club like Arsenal, there are always plenty of links to players who inevitably never arrive in north London. That makes it easier to pick players I would be leaning toward avoiding, and the first is Amadou Onana.
The Everton midfielder is a good player and has drawn the eye of plenty of big clubs, but he needs to be more stylistically suited to what Mikel Arteta wants from his midfield. While he is a great tackler, I progressively want more from a marquee midfield signing, and I’d be more inclined to look to a top box-to-box player and move Rice into the sixth position.
Arsenal Back in the Game for Osimhein?
Arsenal will not make a rash decision in the transfer market following Benjamin Sesko’s football contract renewal.
One of the most significant missing pieces from someone with Arsenal tickets is the need for a professional striker.
Now, they want to rectify this and actively go for a striker.
The Gunners saw one of the targets they saw as a potential striker candidate sign a new deal last week and since have faced questions about where their crosshairs may turn next in the market.
It was reported just under two weeks ago that despite the noise surrounding the Slovenian forward, a central midfielder was indeed the club’s priority signing this summer and that any move for Sesko at that time remains some way off.
Days later, the RB Leipzig man signed a new deal removing the £55.6million release clause. The tall forward opted to resolve his future early in the window, as expected, and stay in Germany for another season.
Since then, Arsenal has been linked with several centre-forwards, including Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. However, a move for the Nigerian is unlikely at this stage, and Arsenal has not heard anything to support claims of an imminent offer being made.
Arsenal certainly needs reinforcement in the forward line despite their priority being in the middle third for the moment.
With the potential for both Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson to leave, this would only further that necessity. The striker market is not forthcoming with standout options, with a preference instead swaying to a wide player to offer Bukayo Saka some much-needed rest and competitive rotation.
It is still being determined who the standout candidate would be for the Gunners in these areas, as work is currently focused on midfield. Last summer, Declan Rice was the priority target from the start of the window, and the club was willing and able to commit to a £ 100 million plus move for the then West Ham stalwart.
Any such move this summer is not on the cards, although a significant number of sales could change that later in the window. Edu has plenty of surplus players in addition to Nketiah and Nelson, who could leave and bring in a healthy return that could come close to that seen in the summer of 2017.
