Warning to walkers after local grandad almost floored by poor golf drive.

1st May 2021

An elderly Southport grandfather was walking in Hesketh Road by Southport Municipal Golf Club when a fast golf ball left the club boundaries and almost hit his head.

The gentleman was taking his regular morning stroll on the footpath next to the road when the poorly driven ball had sliced far outside the golf course. No traditional golf warning of “fore” was given, as the ball flew towards the man’s head.

As the grandad approached the small group of golfers, he shouted over the fence, explaining that the ball had almost hit him. Two of the group stayed silent, yet one antagonistic golfer came forward shouting abuse at the elderly man and calling him a “F*****g liar”.

NB. Golf balls can kill. A man aged 69, died after being struck on the head by a golf ball during competition.
