Warning Fake £50 notes circulating in Southport

16th January 2019

A town centre shop owner has asked others to be on the look out for two girls spending fake bank notes.

One shop lost out today after the pair spent a fake £50 note and received £40 change.

They had already been chased out of one shop by an eagle eyed businesswoman but she was too late and couldn’t stop the other shop from missing out.

Sarah Middleman said “today 2 young girls came into our shop on lord street trying to buy a low cost item with a fake Scottish £50 note obviously wanting the £40+ change in real money. I refused to take it so they said they’d be back with changed money, as they wanted the item as a present. I put my coat on and tried to find them and didn’t want them doing the same to another store but unfortunately I was to late and a shop further down took the note and gave them over £40 in change so they are obviously now out of pocket. I saw them cross over the road and meet 2 young lads and go into the church grounds next to sainsburys so thinking they are operating as a gang.”
