Warning after bogus BT scam man conned £5,000 from Southport resident.
A Southport resident received a phone call supposedly from BT warning her that her Wi – Fi was about to go down. There was music and general noise in the background as we have come to expect from a call centre.
She was told not to touch the computer or close it down as the problem needed to be corrected by BT and they would need access to her computer. The lady was further asked to pay a small fee to their Fraud Team for the work to be completed. She saw the money being transferred on her screen and all looked normal.
It was only when the bank queried her paying out a regular amount by MoneyGram that she became aware of a problem.
Needless to say it was not BT who had contacted her and the resident lost £5,000.
