Dukes Ward councillors, Mike Prendergast and Sir Ron Watson, have been working with officers at Sefton Council to get plaques at the War Memorial on Lord Street repaired which had faded.
After being contacted by concerned residents, Cllr Mike Prendergast has been liaising with the Civic & Mayoral Services Department at Sefton Council to have the matter addressed.
Cllr Prendergast said, “I am pleased to say that the officers at Sefton Council with responsibility for the War Memorial have been very helpful and sympathetic to the concerns raised. Over time there is naturally a fading of the names inscribed on the many plaques commemorating those who gave their lives serving their country. It is only right and proper that their service continues to be recognised and we should ensure the memorial is kept in excellent condition.”
The works at the memorial are ongoing with research having been carried out from military records to ensure accuracy.
Cllr Sir Ron Watson said, “The War Memorial is an incredibly important civic monument and so many Southport families will have the names of family members inscribed on the memorial. I’m delighted that we have been able to work with Sefton Council to maintain the War Memorial.”
