Hundreds of vulnerable people in Southport are being targeted by scammers.
The criminals are preying on people who are concerned about their energy bills in a bid to extort or steal money from their pockets.
As energy prices are set to increase from 1st of
October, scammers have already begun exploiting
this period of uncertainty with fake emails and
texts claiming to offer discounts on energy bills.
A number of scams have been circulating including one which entices people to apply for the £400 energy bill discount where the recipient is instructed to follow a link to a fake Ofgem website.
They are then asked provide personal details in order to set up direct debit for the funds.
Action Fraud has stated that more than 1,500
reports have been made to the National Fraud
Intelligence Bureau relating to this.
