Three local ladies braved the mud, hills and an array of challenging obstacles at the weekend to complete the Tough Mudder to raise vital funds for Southport Baby Bank.
Kirsty Pennington, Jenny Hankin and Nicola Cave took part in the gruelling challenge in Skipton on Saturday.
Some of the obstacles over the hilly 5 kilometre course involved crawling under sections of barbed wire, through mud trenches, climbing over 40 foot high cargo nets and plunging through ice cold water.
Despite making it to the final obstacle, “Electroshock Therapy,” and after being so careful when traversing the extremely difficult course terrain, Jenny was shocked by one of the many hanging wires the team had to navigate and, just feet from the finish line, landed awkwardly and broke her leg.
Determined to complete the course, her teammates (along with a fantastic on-site paramedic) carried her across the line.
Baby Bank founder Kirsty Pennington said, “We joked about dragging each other across if we had to, not knowing how true that would be!”
“Having 7 children between us and years of pretty much doing nothing physical before booking this, we still went out and gave it everything and proved that women can do anything with teamwork and determination!”
Southport Baby Bank launched in October 2019 and expected to help 25-50 families in their first year.
During Covid they helped over 150 in those first 18 months.
When the baby bank was launched, they were expecting a model that relied on donations of items which worked amazingly well initially but Covid scuppered that and thanks to some incredible donations from individuals and local businesses and families they have been able to spend thousands of pounds on constantly staying stocked up ready for anybody who needs them.
The baby bank is run by volunteers. Every penny the baby bank receives goes towards items and their storage and distribution.
