The Salvation Army is to launch a friendship café which will be the first of its kind in Southport.
The inaugural session of the Friendship Café will take place on Sunday, July 7, at 1:00 pm in the coffee lounge at The Salvation Army’s church and community centre located on Shakespeare Street.
The event, which will last for two hours and will take place every Sunday from the initial session, will include activities and light refreshments and will allow new friendship groups to form for the people, and visitors, of the town.
The two hour session, which is free of charge, is for adults and will be inclusive and user friendly to all with the blind, hearing impaired and people living with dementia all welcome and encouraged to attend the café.
Captain Michael Hutchings, leader of the Southport Church and Community Centre said: “It’s an important part of our work to support the local community and we’re pleased to open up our doors to host Southport’s first Friendship Café which we feel there is a need for within this town.
“We wanted to create a safe place that is welcoming, friendly and inclusive and somewhere that relationships can be built. The idea behind the friendship café is to provide an activity that reminds people that there is no need to feel isolated and alone.”
The weekly event will offer a warm, welcoming and relaxed environment and will also help people who struggle to feel included in mainstream society activities.
