Tory Damien Moore on course for election victory, say polls
Veteran Southport journalist Martin Hovden writes: Conservative candidate Damien Moore has a 68% chance of winning Southport in tomorrow’s general election, according to new polls released today.
With a predicted vote share of 38%, Mr Moore has a 10 point lead over both his man rivals – Labour’s Liz Savage and Liberal Democrat Sue McGuire.
And nearly half (49%) of those polled say they want to see Theresa May remain as Prime Minister. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has the support of 38% who would like to see him move into Downing Street, while just 13% favour Lib Dem boss Tim Farron.
More than 70% say they are enthusiastic about or have accepted Brexit, according to the Lord Ashcroft Polls, with just 28% wanting the decision reversed.
However, 62% of those polled in the town, say Britain is currently on the wrong track, with 38% saying the country is on the right track.
When asked how they think the economy will fare over the next year, 51% said “quite well” with 38% saying “quite badly”.
Meanwhile, polling expert Martin Baxter of Electoral Calculus, is predicting a Conservative gain from the Lib Dems in Southport. He says the Tories have a 60% chance of success and will gain a 12% majority.
But the big shock, he reveals, is that Labour has a 25% chance of success, with the Lib Dems at just 14%. This is just another indication that Southport is no longer a two-horse race, with Labour sweeping up voters who have in the past voted tactically for the Lib Dems.
Nationally, the Ashcroft polls predict the Tories will win 357 seats meaning a majority of 64.
Polling stations are open in Southport tomorrow from 7am-10pm. Whatever your view, don’t waste your vote.
