Tory chief is ‘gagged’ over Euro Referendum
The Conservative Party nationally has banned its party chairmen from expressing any views on the Euro Referendum. Southport Constituency Conservative Chairman Cllr Harry Bliss told Sefton Council’s Southport Area Committee last night that he would be happy to express his view on the subject but he was ‘not allowed’. It seems that the Conservative Party’s divisions over Europe are now so deep that they are trying to keep their local party chairmen ‘neutral’ to try to pull the pieces back together after the Referendum has passed.
Members of the Southport Area Committee had been asked by a local resident for their views on the benefits to the town of remaining within the European Union. The Committee Members, on a straw poll at the end of discussion showed unanimous support for Britain remaining in the EU – with the exception of a handful of councillors who did not express a view either way.
