The thin white line: Police officers arrested after ‘sniffing white powder’ in front of club ravers

OTSNews.co.uk can reveal that a serving officer with Merseyside Police has been arrested after he was allegedly caught on nightclub CCTV footage ‘sniffing a white powder’ in Southport.

The 33 year old officer, who was off duty at time of the alleged offence, was arrested by his colleagues after being caught by witnesses who described him ‘sniffing white powder while using his police ID’.

The incident took place shortly before midnight on Thursday December 29 at Beach Bar nightclub on West Street.

After witnesses to the incident alerted club bosses, CCTV was reviewed and police were called immediately.

Beach Bar Owner Craig Winder and his staff were later praised for their actions after calm removing the suspect from the scene after they reviewed CCTV footage.

It’s also believed that the alleged suspect asked both bar staff and customers to sell him drugs.

Merseyside police have now confirmed that they have arrested a 33-year-old serving officer for being in possession of a controlled substance.

He remains in custody for questioning.

A witness to the incident, who did not want to be named, said: “I was outside the Beach Bar in the smoking area when a tall man and someone approached me asking if I wanted any drugs.

“I replied no when he then got his Merseyside Police ID card out.

“He was with a girl who also claimed to be a police officer and she again asked me if I wanted any.

“The male police officer then shaked a white bag of powder into his hand and sniffed it in front of me.

“I said I recognised him as a policeman from around town and he just replied telling me he was off duty!

“I warned the club owners who reviewed CCTV and then called the police.

“I can’t believe what I had witnessed.”

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm a 33-year-old man from Southport, who is a serving police officer, was arrested in the early hours of this morning (Friday, 30 December 2016) on Lord Street, Southport, on suspicion of possession of a controlled drug.”
