The importance of threading in Italian metallurgy

21st July 2024

Threading is a crucial and widespread processing method for creating helical grooves on metal. In Italy and around the world, the metalworking industry uses it for various purposes.

Metal threading holds everything together, from plumbing fittings to electrical circuit conduits. Furthermore it enables secure and reliable component connections.

What is metal threading?

Metal threading involves two metal surfaces shaped to connect. The process typically joins a solid cylindrical piece with a matching hollow part (nut-screw).

Metalworkers create a helical-shaped thread (screw thread) on both elements. Each piece’s thread requires equal spacing (pitch) to ensure they connect securely. It also makes putting them together and taking them apart effortless.

Types of metal threading

Threading typically involves two cylindrical metal surfaces, one threaded on the inside and the other on the outside. Internal applications include ferrules, reinforcing rings and nuts. External uses include bolts, cylinders and metal rods.

Types of thread vary depending on their purpose, such as parallel or tapered. There are also three major categories. These include fastening, transmission and transport.

  • Fastening thread: This thread includes nuts and bolts that tighten something together.
  • Transmission thread: This category involves converting motion from rotary to linear.
  • Transport thread: This type involves screws that help with water conveyance and heavy machinery.

Their measurement format also varies. There are two common systems, millimetres and Whitworth. The first marks items with M, measured in millimetres, while the other with W, measured in fractions of an inch.

Why is metal threading important?

Metal threading ensures every part fits together seamlessly. This process helps the machinery or infrastructure operate efficiently and keep its integrity.

Precision-engineering of metal threading reduces the risk of parts failing, saving time and money. Industries that manage high-capacity loads and need to convert them accurately require reliability.

Metal threads serve various purposes, and their importance often depends on that. Overall, they offer four major advantages:

  • Support: Threaded components, like nuts and bolts, offer reliable support for mechanical structures. They also make assembly and disassembly straightforward and convenient.
  • Precision and control: Threaded parts used in transportation or that convert motion ensure mechanical precision and control. They also allow for safe movement and accurate positioning.
  • Sealing: Threaded parts that create a gas or liquid seal ensure neither get in nor out. For example, one of the top four causes of weak electricity is because of loose connections. They allow moisture to seep in and corrode the wiring.
  • Fastening: Threaded parts that screw counter-clockwise prevent loosening caused by self-movement. For example, electrical components with left-hand thread connections remain secure in high-vibration environments like aircraft.

Thread for success

Metal threading plays a crucial role in everyday life. It helps secure electrical, liquid and gas parts and ensures everything works efficiently. This process also allows for the accuracy and control of technical machinery.

Italy is a powerhouse in conventional manufacturing, producing the second-largest output in Europe. By embracing digital technology to allow for automation and innovation, they’re becoming a leader in precision-threading very fast.
