18th December 2019

Officers from the Local Policing Team based at Southport Police Station have today run a Roads Policing operation as part of the Christmas Road Safety Campaign.

They were joined today by officers from the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) alongside staff from Sefton Council Taxi Licencing and staff from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) The focus was on ensuring vehicles were roadworthy and that licences were accurate and up to date. Drug drive and breath testing was conducted where a moving traffic offence had occurred.

23 Taxis were escorted to a site at the Eco Centre car park by officers from the RPU bike team. Two stop notices were issued and two vehicle defect reports were issued. One driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving after failing a roadside drug swab.

32 commercial vehicles were escorted to the site by the RPU bike team. Five immediate prohibitions were issued, consisting of four tyre defects and one defective handbrake issue.

Drivers are reminded of the importance of regular checks on their vehicles, to ensure lamps are working, tyres are inflated correctly and not worn excessively and that wipers and washers are functioning correctly. It is also important to keep track of MOT and Vehicle Excise duty dates, as failure to meet these dates can invalidate your insurance policy.
