Storm Ciara Update – Southport

The sea wall did its job in keeping Marine Drive from flooding, with only minor flooding under the pier, but still being passable. Coastguard services were on the sea wall monitoring high tide at 10:52am, while some ‘storm watchers’ gathered.

Across town there have been minor areas of flooding which are now subsiding due to a respite of the rain. Elsewhere, fallen branches from a tree blocked Water Lane earlier this morning, but we have had no other reports of fallen trees etc.

The forecast continues to be for rain and high winds into Monday and Tuesday and now the Met Office have issued a YELLOW warning for Southport stating the following: ‘POTENTIAL DISRUPTION DUE TO SNOW AND ICE FROM MON 00:00 UNTIL MON 23:50 – Heavy snow and strong winds will combine to lead to disruption to travel, especially over higher routes’.

Advice therefore remains the same, in order to reduce demand on the emergency services, about ensuring wheely bins and garden furniture items are secured. Motorcyclists and cyclists are advised to find other ways to travel where possible and drivers of high sided vehicles should take extra care on the Formby By-Pass and coastal routes.
