It’s been a positive summer so far for Stockport’s Liam Broady, and now the excitement is growing about what he might be able to achieve going forward.
Broady already has a wealth of experience on the circuit, but his best days might still be ahead of the 27-year-old, as he continues to challenge higher up the rankings.
Broady Makes Moves in Miami
Having impressed on his way to reaching the final of the ATP Challenger Tour event in Biella, back in March, Broady went on to attract the interest of betting punters with his efforts at the Miami Open. Coached by his sister Naomi, an accomplished singles and doubles player in her own right, Broady managed to reach the main draw of an ATP Masters 1000 for just the second time in his career.
Broady, who has previously been doubles partner to 40/1 title shot in the 2021 Wimbledon odds, Andy Murray, shone on his own in Florida as he beat Juncheng Shang and Federico Gaio in qualifying. It was an affirming experience for the Heaton Chapel native, who, in the end, went on to lose 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-1 in the main draw first round to Miomir Kecmanović. Broady will take plenty from the time in Miami, and it will only serve him in good stead going forward.
High Praise Coming Broady’s Way
Broady has been earning high praise in the British game after reaching his career-high of 137 in the world rankings back in April. Broady’s efforts caught the attention of LTA’s Head of Men’s Tennis, Leon Smith, who has been impressed with the Stockport star’s form. Smith spoke of the “significant strides” Broady has made over the last couple of seasons and feels the player is in great physical shape.
Having the eye of the Great Britain Davis Cup team captain can be no bad thing for Broady, and Smith’s comments are only likely to drive him on to better things to come.
Breaking New Ground
When it comes to the Grand Slam events, Broady has been able to make the main draws of both Wimbledon and the French Open. Broady made headlines back in 2015 as he reached the second round of the prestigious event at the All England Club. Beating Australia’s Marinko Matosevic in the first round in a five-set thriller, Broady was then beaten by Belgian star David Goffin, who himself went through to the fourth round that year.
It was only last year that Broady managed to reach the main draw of the French Open, before losing to the Czech Republic’s Jiří Veselý. Reaching the main draw at Roland-Garros in 2020 shows the build-up of form Broady has enjoyed, and the potential that has his supporters excited about what the future holds.
There is still plenty of the summer to go, and it’s intriguing to see what else Broady can achieve in 2021. With help from his sister, Broady appears to be pushing back towards the form that got him in the British Davis Cup side for a tie with Spain back in 2018.
Broady has already achieved so much in the sport, but based on recent evidence, the best could be yet to come.
