One of Southport’s present Conservative Euro-MPs, who is campaigning vigorously for a second Brexit referendum has been re-selected as the top MEP candidate for the Conservative Party in the North West.
Dr Sajjad ‘Saj’ Karim, who has described Brexit as ‘madness’, will be at the top of the Tory party’s candidates list in the North West of England in the election on May 23rd. This means that if the Tories get even just one out or the nine MEPs elected in our region, that single MEP will be Saj Karim. So, anyone voting Conservative in Southport will be voting for one of Britain’s leading ‘Remainers’.
Southport’s handful of Tory councillors are split roughly 50: 50 on the issue of Europe while the town’s MP Damien Moore is a keen ‘Leaver’.
Hundreds of Tory voters narrowly put Sir Ron Watson into the Council chamber for Dukes Ward last year, not knowing that Sir Ron was ardently pro-EU.
Dr Karim, an MEP since 2004, said last December:
“The only way to stop this madness in its tracks is a Parliamentary process leading to a People’s Vote. We want to be leading in our continent ideally through the European Union and projecting ourselves to the globe and winning, not falling down with a whimper.’
