Southport’s KGV Geography Students Visit Chester Zoo

King George V College Geography students recently visited Chester Zoo to enhance their research on the A Level topic ‘Biodiversity under threat’.

Students examined the role that zoo’s play in ex-situ and in-situ conservation management.

Mike Graham, Geography Course Leader at KGV, said ‘It was a really interesting learning experience for our students, which offered a great opportunity to get up close to some of the critically endangered species we study in college and examine the role the zoo plays in their conservation”

Students went to two interactive workshops delivered by the conservation team at the zoo, which explored the threats posed to species such as orangutans in the wild, and the steps that have been taken to try and conserve the species and their habitat.

Mike added, ‘The workshops were a great way of providing our students with a hands on experience for examining the threats species face in the wild. In one exhibit our students were able to examine various artefacts like ivory and rhino horn which had been confiscated at airport customs’

Last summer, Geography students at King George V achieved national success, scoring the highest ALPs (Active Learning Practices) grade in the country (a measurement of value added).
