Southport scouts head for world jamboree

Celebrity wildman Bear Grylls, has wished good luck to scouts from Southport who are heading to North America for the 24th World Scout Jamboree.

Five Scouts will represent the town at the 24th World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia from July 22 to August 2.

Genevieve Butterworth, 16, from Stanley High School; Joshua Cox, 16, from Christ The King School; Mackenzie Morgan, 14, from Birkdale High School; Sam O’Malley, 14, from Merchant Taylor’s School and Bethany Russell, 13, from Meols Cop High School are all attending, alongside Leader Adam McCarter, 18.

The jamboree will bring together Scouts from across the globe. Held every four years it is described as a ‘once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’ for young people.

Clare Russell, one of the organisers said: “There will be 45,000 Scouts attending from 200 countries – and five of them are from Southport!”
