Community spirit in full force for Salvation Army in Southport thanks to local volunteers – but charity appeals for more
A charity is celebrating the Southport community spirit thanks to the support it receives from a team of volunteers and is appealing for more to help it continue the support it offers to the town.
The Salvation Army’s Southport Corps, located on Shakespeare Street, has a strong number of volunteers that offer support across various departments however it has revealed that it still needs more and has chosen Volunteers’ Week to get its message out there and to share just how important volunteers are to the local community.
Volunteers’ Week, which runs from Saturday, June 1, to Saturday, June 7, is an opportunity to celebrate volunteering in all its diversity, something that The Salvation Army Southport is proud to be a part of, with a total of 60 volunteers.
The 60 volunteers are aged as young as 15, who volunteer with schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh award, to helpers in their 80s. All support the Southport corps (church) across a number of departments and occasions including the charity shop and coffee lounge which are open Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm and Saturdays 10am – 1pm.
Peter Elliott, community services manager at The Salvation Army in Southport said: “Our volunteers are brilliant at helping us provide a range of services to the local community. Without them the centre wouldn’t be able to operate to the extent that it does.
“Our volunteers give up their time to help us support the people of Southport and beyond, and their hard work and dedication is truly inspirational and we cannot thank them enough for their support.
“We’re always on the lookout for more people to help us, and volunteering can also be a stepping stone to getting into, or back into work, so if you’re looking to help the local community, need to build on your experience or just do something for your own wellbeing, get in touch as we would love to hear from you.”
The Salvation Army has more than 12,000 volunteers across the UK who are involved in every part of the charity’s frontline services – from anti-trafficking and modern slavery, to homelessness and addiction support, care for older people and community services.
Claire Bonham, Volunteer Development Manager at The Salvation Army said: “We see every day how much our 12,000 volunteers are gaining from giving their time to help others. Often people are looking for a way to give back to the community they live in but we would encourage everyone to consider volunteering to see how it might improve their own wellbeing and positivity.
“Every volunteer comes with skills, talents and experiences that contribute to the work of The Salvation Army, whatever their background.
