8th February 2018

Damien said: “I was delighted to visit the Tate & Lyle Sugar Refinery in the Docklands area of East London.”

“The company has had a factory on the same site for over a century and is an example of a British business that has a global outlook; importing sugar cane from all over the world. Lyle’s Golden Syrup, is also made by the company and is believed to be the world’s oldest brand.”

“During the tour, I was shown the warehouse where hundreds of tonnes of raw, unrefined sugar are held following shipment from other countries. We also visited the pier where cargo ships dock and unload, the packaging plant as well as being taken through the complex chemical refining the raw product goes through to make granulated sugar.”

“Following the tour I talked to some of Tate & Lyle’s corporate representatives about the impact that Brexit would have upon the company and what needs to happen to ensure that Britain makes the most of global trading opportunities post-Brexit.”
