Southport MP shares stories about the late Sir Ian Percival with his family.

Damien Moore said:

‘New MPs have been sharing thoughts about their first year in Parliament. In November, I was very pleased to meet Lady Madeline Percival, the wife of my late predecessor Sir Ian.

‘I spent the morning and afternoon with her and their son Robert, and they shared their stories with me. Sir Ian becamethe Member of Parliament for Southport in 1959, and was returned at every subsequent election until he retired in 1987. He served as a Solicitor General under Margaret Thatcher, and was a fierce opponent of terrorism.

‘Last summer, during the election, many residents brought up Sir Ian; and shortly after I won, I received a warm message of congratulations from his family. In my maiden speech to Parliament, I felt it was right to pay tribute to him and his decades of service to our town.

‘Sir Ian was a diligent MP who was dedicated to his constituents, and a strong voice for Southport both in local politics and on the national scene. He is a model for me, and he should be for others too.’
