Southport MP explains why he voted to keep public sector pay cap

Southport MP Damien Moore said he voted against a proposal to increase public sector pay as it would have benefitted highly paid executives too much.

MP Damien Moore told OTS News: “The public sector pay gap applies right across the board and includes some of the most well paid in our society, from CEO’s to senior managers.

“Like many of my colleagues, I do not believe that those who are struggling should have to pay more, in order to support a blanket pay rise to all of those individuals who are already living comfortably.

“Instead we should focus on the lowest paid public sector workers – such as those working in our emergency services, including nurses – who do a tremendous job under often-difficult circumstances.

“The amendment put forward by Labour last night would have given a blanket and significant pay rise to

those chief executives and senior managers and that is why, along with my colleagues, I voted against it.

“I firmly believe nurses and other emergency service staff should receive a pay rise, not senior bureaucrats and I will work hard, both in Parliament and Southport, to bring about that change in the months and years ahead.”
