34 year old Philip Howard attacked his former girlfriend and mother to his child in an alcohol fuelled attack over car keys.
34 year old Philip Howard was in court yesterday after attacking his former girlfriend with a playstation and strangling her. Judge Norman Wright, sentencing, said “You assaulted her, you kicked her, you hit her with a PlayStation – a bit of plastic not of great weight but still a weapon – and you attempted to strangle her with your hands around her throat.”
Howard was sentenced to a 15-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, with a two-year supervision order and 200 hours of unpaid work. He was also given a three-year restraining order preventing him from contacting his victim and told Howard to pay her £500 in compensation.
The prosecutor said the reason for Howard visiting the address on Shaftesbury Avenue, Birkdale, at around 11pm on November 12 last year, was to discus an issue surrounding a set of car keys. The discussion turned into a full blown argument which was heard by neighbours before Howard attacked his girlfriend of 11 years who had broken up with him a few days earlier.
Mr Rory McCormack stated that Howard had struggled with mental health problems including depression and anxiety and substance misuse, but had now found himself a job as a delivery driver.
Judge Wright said: “This was a disgraceful, sustained assault on your ex-partner within days of the relationship ending. You were highly intoxicated at the time. It occurred in her own home, where she should feel safe, late at night. Your daughter was present in the premises to no doubt hear what the neighbours heard – the shrieking, screaming and shouting that came from your partner because of your violence.
