Southport Liberal Democrats hit back at Labour’s “Double standards and desperation”

Southport Liberal Democrats have hit back at what they are calling Labour’s “double standards and desperation” in the current local election campaign.

New Southport Lib Dem parliamentary candidate John Wright says:

“Labour have spent a year attacking the Lib Dems for comments made about where candidates live – now they are using exactly the same issue to attack the Lib Dems! It’s sheer hypocrisy and double-standards”.

Mr Wright does, though, concede that the Labour parliamentary candidate does indeed live closer to Southport than he does. “It’s true. She lives approximately one mile closer to Southport than I do! It’s laughable that they are making this an issue!”.

He defended previous Liberal Democrat comments during last year’s general election about where the candidates lived saying: “I think the issue of where a candidate lives can sometimes be relevant if it’s an indication of how well he or she knows a community and its issues, and how well-placed they are to get things done. At the next election in Southport, as things stand, none of the candidates for the three main parties will actually live in the town, and will, quite rightly, have to be judged on their individual merits, the policies they stand for and the issues they campaign on. I’m sure that’s how the electorate will want it, so bring it on!”

“The truth is Labour are desperate to get a foothold in Southport in these elections, and will say anything in order to do so. They want to strengthen Bootle Labour’s grip on the council when they should in fact be fighting for Southport to get a fair deal from Sefton Council”.
