Local Liberal Democrats are publicly calling upon Southport’s current MP Damien Moore to submit a letter to the 1922 Conservative Backbench Committee to help trigger a Conservative leadership contest and provide a means of removing Boris Johnson from office.
John Pugh, Mr Moore’s immediate predecessor, said: ‘I am aware, perhaps more than most, what a difficult decision this must be for Mr Moore. Party loyalty and his obvious admiration for Boris Johnson must come into play.
‘He stated back in 2019 when strongly backing Mr Johnson for leader that we need someone: “who can sell a one nation vision for Britain”, but that totally depends on people taking seriously the words that come out of the leader’s mouth.
‘We were all told by Mr Moore that Boris Johnson “deserves” our support.
‘The reality is though that a very significant section of the public is neither listening to nor believing what the Prime Minister says.
‘It is a dilemma Damien faces, but loyalty to a party cannot trump the primary duty to one’s constituency and the country.
‘A prime minister who has lost the ear and respect of the nation simply cannot lead.
‘You cannot sell a ‘one nation vision’ or even a pound of tripe once people stop believing you.’
