Southport Community Police Team have recently seen an increase in calls relating to Derelict Properties across the area.
A merseyside police spokesperson said:
“Teenagers and young people are becoming involved in a new and dangerous craze which involves dntering derelict buildings, climbing up onto roofs and causing damage.
“though some young people may get a buzz and adrenaline rush from taking part, they are in fact putting their lives at risk. There are many dangers involved in this type of activity – the most common simply being a person becoming stuck and unable to get down, the most severe may be serious injury or death. It is important to know that these buildings are not playgrounds and although they are derelict or abandoned, they will still likely have an owner and entry may be classed as trespassing.
Abandoned and derelict buildings are dangerous for many reasons, some of which include:
• The floors may be weak or rotten.
• Unstable roofs and ceilings which could collapse at any time.
• Debris will be lying around, which become trip hazards.
We are working in partnerships with Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service MFRS to reduce arson in unoccupied buildings across the area by identifying buildings that are possible arson targets, to minimise risk to Firefighters, emergency services and the wider public by identifying and reducing the threat.
THINK – BEFORE YOU CONSIDER ENTERING A DERELICT OR ABANDONED BUILDING AS ALL SORTS OF THINGS CAN GO WRONG.”
