31st January 2022

In a boost for the Southport economy, the Gauselmann Group have announced the opening of a new casino site dedicated to one of the world’s top software providers, Merkur Gaming.

Boost for Southport Economy

The new London Road Cashino site has seen the creation of ten jobs, a positive move for the wider Southport area that has felt the strain of recent COVID-19 lockdowns.

It is not a surprise that executives of Praesepe, owners of the Merkur brand in the United Kingdom have chosen Southport as the next location for the group’s expansion. The recent news that five local businesses have made the shortlist of the Hidden Gems category for the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards has given confidence for global firms to invest in the area.

Announcing the opening of the new amusements site, Mark Schertle, the Chief Operating Officer of Praesepe stated that 2022 would be “a very exciting time for the MERKUR Slots brand”. Schertle was also convinced that investing in Southport would have significant long term benefits for the town, suggesting that the firm’s investment would “be kick-starting the high street again and supporting the local community with new job opportunities”.

Merkur’s Global Outlook

The Merkur back story is a long and winding one.

The companies website states that Merkur Gaming became part of the Gauselmann Group as far back as 1957. Since the 1950s, Merkur has grown steadily. Initially, the firm focused on the provision of land-based gambling products, including bingo halls and amusement arcades, but in recent times the internet has provided a means for expansion.

The ambitions of Merkur do not stop at Southport high street!

In fact Merkur Gaming’s products are now consumed by gaming enthusiasts in dozens of countries globally.

The expansion of the internet has exacerbated this move. Online casino sites are now big business and Merkur Gaming has positioned itself well in recent years to take advantage of this trend.

Research into Merkur’s current dealings is an eye-opener. Online casino enthusiasts can even access Merkur content in New Zealand! Some of the slots games that Merkur operatives have designed in recent years are household names. Eye of Horus, Ghost Slider, Tricky Trio and Big Buck Bunny are all renowned RNG-style video slots that are supported on several of the iGaming industries top platforms. Tie ups with software firm Blueprint and online casinos, including Mansion Casino, Betway Casino and Mr Play have ensured that Merkur Gaming is a big player in an industry that shows no signs of contracting.

Southport’s Global Appeal?

When a company that is attracting global attention chooses Southport as a base, this can only have a positive impact on the town’s global reputation.

The hope must be that other big-name businesses will also be attracted to the area to underpin economic regeneration that needs a vital boost after two pandemic hit years of trade. But, if one of the world’s leading software firms feels that Southport is the place to be then other stellar businesses may just come to the same conclusion.
