Southport independents guide to a month of foodie heaven in Southport!

This month its all about food and drink here in Southport and we, for one will be loving every minute. Here is our guide to enjoying each of the great events on this month

Food & Drink Festival 2-4th June, Victoria Park.

Fresh off the back of the superb Beer Street hosted by Tap & Bottles, we start June with this weekends Food & Drink Festival.  Absolutely packed to the rafters with street food, producers and mobile bars – we wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t point out that many are local and independent – it really is an unmissable event for foodies and families alike.

Take the bus, take a blanket, take all the family and soak (and gobble) it all up.  Loose clothing wouldn’t go amiss either. There is dozens of excellent street food vendors on the menu selling everything from samosas to squid, to potato swirls and Persian food.  You literally won’t know where to start.

Our top tips? Sharing is caring.  Order one or two dishes per vendor and share it with your loved ones so you will be able to sample your way around the park and miss out on nothing!  Top tip two…pace yourself.  Enjoy a rest on one of the haybales, let the kids burn off energy in the children’s zone or listen to live music and cheer on the contestants at the flaring competition.  You will soon be ready for the next round! (Bonus tip: There are lots of good bars too and a good gin is a great digestif)

Southport Gin Festival, Town Gardens, 9-11th June

Talking of gins, lets segway into event number two – the ever-innovative Remedy and their 2nd annual gin festival.  We will be there Friday night as it opens and we can make no promises there will be any left for the rest of you I am afraid.  Tickets are near sold out now but if you acted fast and got yours you will be enjoying over 100 gins, complimentary tonics, food stalls, live music and a complementary branded glass to boot!  We have been looking forward to this since last year. An amazing independent event delivered in style by an amazing independent business.

Chilli Fest, Town Hall Gardens, 17th June

Last up will be the brand new chilli festival taking place outside the Town Hall on the 17th.  While smaller in scale it will pack a fiery punch.  Sample all things chilli with sauces, chilli plants, curries and more.  Local indie bars Remedy and Tap & Bottles will be there with chilli beer and chilli gin to wash it all down with.  Did we mention there is chilli?!

There’ll be red hot fire breathers and jugglers to entertain and are you up for an eye-watering challenge?  The big chilli eating contest should be mighty entertaining, if not a bit wince inducing.  We can safely say we have not one shred of inclination to be that brave/daft but can you take it on? You have our utmost respect for even trying…..
