Southport GP fronting a health campaign
A Southport GP is fronting a health campaign with the message: start moving towards a healthier you. Doctor Simon Tobin believes that the recently established Hesketh Park run has already brought recordable improvements in the health of the participants and is calling for more people to come to the start line.
He said: “Southport parkrun has created a real buzz. We work really hard to make everyone feel welcome and to encourage everybody, whether they’re running or walking.
“The feedback from my patients is that they really appreciate it. Quite a few people are hesitant about getting involved for the first time, so it helps to have a welcoming atmosphere.”
Dr Tobin, based at the town’s Norwood Surgery, says he has seen a variety of people improve their health through parkrun, including people with diabetes, heart disease, depression and those overweight.
“It’s a win-win situation,” he says. “because people who exercise regularly are healthier, happier and cope with stress better, they need less medication or none at all. The reduced cost of medication and improvements in health eases some of the huge pressure on the NHS.”
“There isn’t a single group of patients I wouldn’t recommend to do parkrun. I’ve encouraged all sorts of people come along – those with diabetes, heart disease, depression or those with no medical conditions who just want to improve their fitness.”
Southport parkrun, one of a network of similar free national events, was established less than a year ago after a concentrated campaign led by Cambridge Ward councillor Pat Keith who said: “ Dr. Tobin has proved a passionate supporter of Southport parkrun and I’m delighted that he is publicising the massive health benefits for people taking part. This aspect is hugely important at a time when the NHS is under unprecedented strain. I believe parkrun is the best free prescription for health and well being.”
