Southport golfer Tommy Fleetwood is still chasing a major after coming agonisingly close at last year’s US Open.
Fleetwood finished a disappointing 46th in the US Open which ended Sunday, but he’s firming in the betting odds for the final two majors of 2019. He is currently in the top 12 to 15 players in betting odds for the US Open in June and the British Open Championship in July.
It’s been a huge month for the Southport native, who also enjoyed the thrill of playing on his home course at Hillside in the British Masters earlier this month. Surprisingly, Fleetwood finished back in eighth position, six shots behind winner Marcus Kinhult of Sweden. Nonetheless, most locals would just have been happy to see the golf star participating in a big tournament in his home town.
Fleetwood Looking to Build on 2018
Last year was the year Tommy Fleetwood went from being a big name in Southport to a big name in world golf. Fleetwood, now 28, represented Europe in the Ryder Cup and achieved career-best finishes in all four majors in 2018. He finished equal-17th in the US Masters, equal-35th in the US PGA, and equal-12th on British territory at the Open Championship.
Most memorably, Fleetwood finished second at the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York State. Heclosed with the sixth round of 63 in US Open history to finish on +2, just one shot behind Brooks Koepka. Incredibly, Fleetwood began the final round six shots behind the leader, but made four straight birdies on holes 12-15 to give Koepka an almighty scare.
Fleetwood Firms in US and British Open Odds
With the 2019 US Masters and US PGA behind us, the next major on the calendar is the US Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California on June 13-16. All of Southport will be holding their breath as Fleetwood aims to go one better than last year and win the trophy. The following month, Fleetwood will compete on British soil at the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, on July 18-21.
We checked out the Free Bets UK site and found Fleetwood high up in the betting odds for both majors. For example, bet365 has Fleetwood on the 13th line of betting in the US Open betting market, at 30/1. Brooks Koepka is paying 13/2 to go back-to-back-to-back, fellow American Dustin Johnson is paying 15/2, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy is paying 12/1, and comeback king Tiger Woods is paying 14/1.
As for the Open Championship, the bookies really expect Fleetwood to perform in Northern Ireland. He is equal-ninth in betting at odds of 25/1, placing him behind only Koepka, Johnson, McIlroy, Wood, Englishman Justin Rose, Francesco Molinari, Jordan Spieth, and Rickie Fowler.
With only a few weeks to go, anticipation is building to see what the US Open and British Open have in store for Tommy Fleetwood.
