A team of fundraisers from Southport have raised £3,700 for North West Cancer Research after hosting a sell-out banquet at a well-known Chinese restaurant.
More than 100 guests gathered at Ho Lee Chow’s on Rotten Row to feast on a range of authentic Chinese dishes all prepared by the popular restaurant.
All money raised from the fundraiser has been donated to local charity North West Cancer Research, and will support life-saving research projects which are looking at ways to improve our understanding of cancer.
Tickets for the banquet cost £25 and not one, but four auctions and a raffle held on the evening generated £1,700, which was then match funded by Barclaycard’s fundraising team.
Led by Olive Cutts, chair for the Southport fundraising group for North West Cancer Research, the group hold events throughout the year. This year so far, the group has raised over £25,000 for the charity.
Olive said: “This is one of our most popular fundraising events and each year we get a phenomenal response and turn out. Thanks to the generosity of our guests and also our hosts who give their time and support, we’ve been able to raise this great sum of money.
“Thanks must also go to Barclaycard for their continued support and providing match funding which takes our totals to more than £3,000.
“Cancer is something which has touched so many of our lives in so many different ways. The money that we have raised will enable some of the region’s top researchers look at new ways of treating cancer.”
North West Cancer Research is an independent charity operating across the North West. It has recently committed to funding more than £13million worth of research over the next five years.
This includes £1million worth of funding to sustain research based at the North West Cancer Research Centre at the University of Liverpool, until 2021.
Alastair Richards, CEO, North West Cancer Research, said: “Olive and the Southport fundraisers have been avid supporters of our charity and always make significant contributions to our cause.
“Thanks to their hard work and the kindness of the local residents in Southport, this money will help support a range of cancer research projects based right here in the North West.”
The next event organised by the group will be the coffee and mince pie event on Wednesday 29th November. Tickets cost £3.50 and include entry to the Masonic Hall, Southport where there will be stalls, homemade cakes and raffles to raise further funds for the charity.
