Southport came away from Warrington with a 4-0 win, a scoreline that makes the victory look a lot more comfortable than it was after another highly competitive workout for the squad.
Goals from Jack Sampson, Mo Ali, Marcus Carver and George Newell gave the Sandgrounders the win in our eighth pre-season game scoring 25 goals in the process.
The first goal came on 27 minutes with Sampson finishing after some neat interplay with Newell on the edge of the box created space for him to slot home.
There were chances at both ends of the pitch, Trialist was through on goal for Southport but fired wide and Newell went close with a header in the 37th minute that went just wide.
Warrington came close to going into the half time break level when an excellent free kick went across goal and just evaded the oncoming attacker.
It was all Warrington at the start of the second period and only excellent goalkeeping by Dan Hanford with two fine saves and resolute defending, with Charlie Oliver once again outstanding at the back, maintaining the Southport lead.
As is so often the case Warrington’s pressure failed to come to anything and on 54 minutes Mo Ali was on hand to prod home after a ‘keeper fumble from a corner.
The 68th minute saw six outfield subs come on and it took Marcus Carver only three minutes to make his mark with a brilliant finish from the edge of the area that flew over the keeper’s head and into the net. A contender for Goal Of The Pre Season!
Connor Woods twice came close to making it four before George Newell got in on the act in the 89th minute with another rocket shot that would also enter a goal of pre-season competition.
A 4-0 win in front of a decent crowd with good numbers travelling from Southport and they will have gone home happy after another win and good performance with two sublime goals.
