A Southport Councillor is calling for the government to ‘get a grip’ on spiralling rail prices and introduce a complete freeze this year and look towards a sustained reduction of prices and better co-ordination.
Councillor Tony Dawson says: “Today’s news coverage is of a record season ticket price hike to commuters. But other rail travellers are deterred by a complete hotch potch of pricing and exorbitant costs of travel over any distance which often makes it seem much cheaper to congest the motorways with their cars.”
“Rail prices in Britain are massively too expensive, full stop.”
“The amazing thing is that several of our large rail companies are owned by state controlled companies which subsidise rail travel in other European countries out of the profits they make in Britain.”
“In Southport we have to put up with overcrowded cattle trucks from Manchester causing passengers to stand even long after peak commuter time – and we are not even allowed to pick up long distance advance purchase tickets from Southport station. The government does not care.”

“There is effectively no transport policy in this country whatsoever other than to allow very rich people all over the world to become even richer while ripping off British commuters and causing the travelling public of this country to create millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide in car journeys they would prefer not to make.”
“The government infrastructure adviser has just resigned citing as one reason the vast sums of public money which the Transport Secretary has agreed to pour into the pockets of Virgin Rail to no clear purpose.”
“We are paying between three and five times the European average for rail travel in Britain and the government seems happy for it to get even worse. This abuse of the travelling public just has to stop!”
