Commuters are advised to check their provider’s website ahead of travelling to Manchester this morning to see if their trains are running.
It comes after heavy rain caused a landslide inches from the railway line between Southport and Burscough Bridge station last night.
Constant rainfall over the last 24 hours caused part of the land next to network rail tracks in Burscough to fall away, meaning it was too dangerous to run trains along the line.
This has led to widespread cancellations between services from Southport to Wigan and vice versa.
Manchester Piccadilly’s Twitter account said this morning: “Our engineers are still working to repair the landslip caused by heavy rain and flooding (forecast again today).
“Lines are closed between Wigan and Southport and buses running.”
Network Rail’s earthworks team remained in site throughout the night but advised commuters to double check their services are not disrupted this morning.
