Southport College is celebrating two outstanding achievements; the highest number of visitors in the last 7 years to its Open Evening on Monday 12 October and the highest pass rate ever on extended diplomas (equivalent to A-Levels).
Southport College Principal John Clarke said “There has never been a better time to choose a vocational course. More people are realising that A-levels are not the only route to university or a professional career and our pass rate now puts us up there with some of the most outstanding colleges in the country. Extended diplomas are the vocational alternative to A-Levels and provide students with another route to university and beyond; over 300 of our students applied for university level study last year which is another significant increase and underlines the calibre of the qualifications we offer.”
Open Evenings at Southport College provide students with the opportunity to discuss course options with tutors and take part in interactive course tasters. Brough’s butchers were at the College giving a demonstration in the newly-refurbished catering department’s kitchens, Performing Arts students entertained guests with a series of mini-productions and photography & media students demonstrated their digital skills in a series of masterclasses for visitors. The exceptional attendance at College open events demonstrates the increasing number of students and their parents who are considering Southport College as an option for study and Apprenticeships at the highest level
The College’s Art and Design team helped visitors print free tote bags to beat the new plastic bag charge and curriculum leader for Art and Design, Kelly Broughton said “It’s fantastic to meet the new students and their parents at open events and this year was even more enjoyable as we helped beat the bag charge with a great giveaway. What’s more, so many of the visitors already knew the universities they want to head to and the career paths they are going to take after completing their course with us which is very encouraging as a tutor. ”
Southport College’s next Open Evening takes place on Monday 30 November between 3.30pm and 7.00pm for further details visit www.southport.ac.uk
