Southport boxing legend spars again in surprise match

24th September 2017

A ‘retired’ Southport boxer still can’t seem to give up the gloves.

Jon Lund, known as the Southport supremo, who definitely pulls no punches, took on Nigel Williamson in a last minute exhibition match on Saturday night.

It’s Jon’s 15th time back in the ring since he claimed he was retiring – but the temptation of sparring once more got the better of him – marking the latest bout in an illustrious career which echoes back all the way to the early 1980s.

His sparring partner, a former pro heavyweight, went toe to toe with Jon, matching the legends flurry of punches.

Speaking to OTS News Jon said: “this was another last minute move around from last night.

“My 15th ‘exhibition’ since retiring last summer.

“For once though it was someone older than myself – Nigel is a 53 year old a former heavyweight pro boxer.

“I was there as ring and ref again when his opponent didn’t turn up.”

Jon runs Southport Amateur Boxing Club in High Park.
