Southport Bowling Club Celebrates 80th Anniversary

A local Flat Green Bowling Club has celebrated its 80th Anniversary this weekend at the place of its inception- Kings Gardens at the Promenade Southport. Having run continuously through a World War and a strong regular membership base the Club has now entered its 8th decade. President of the Southport Flat Green Bowling Club Mr Bob Ford who was hosting the celebratory event which included the first game of the season with over 50 of the club’s members is encouraging people of all ages with a potential interest to visit the Club should they wish to get involved in any capacity.

The Club has members ranging from as old as 93 right down to University students aged 19 years of age. The Club presently has a 60:40 ratio of male to female members however beyond Southport this particular club is proud to have members hailing from as far regionally as Penwortham, Leyland and even as far as the Netherlands in Europe!

Resort Councillor David Barton who was recently contacted by the Club for his assistance with securing alternative Car Parking facilities at this popular Promenade South venue, after members had been informed that the grounds at the site of the nearby Pumping Station were unavailable due to building works was invited to the celebration along with President of Bowls England Mrs Viv Tomlinson who was there to herald the momentous occasion. Having liaised closely with the relevant department at Sefton Council the members are now able to park at nearby Princes Park for the foreseeable future and has expressed his gratitude to the Council for having acted upon his request which he believes will go a long way to demonstrating goodwill between this facet of the local community and the Local Authority.

Cllr Barton said: “It is a prestigious honour to have been chosen to be one of the dual Guests of Honour at this historic event both for the Club and the local Southport community. Not only have I been able to learn more for myself about this exciting hobby, but I have also had the pleasure of meeting an incredible team of individuals that truly appreciate their local environment and indeed do much to put our classic resort town on the map via their competitions.

It really has been a pleasure to have been able to help the members with their Car Parking case and I look to also assisting the Club with further matters in the future. At this time I should like to especially thank Bob for such a wonderful reception and of course to Viv and the Club for an excellent time in their company.”
