A Southport businessman who is campaigning to rid his street of a new cycle lane has said ‘if you can’t beat them, join them!’ and taken up cycling to make the system appear busy.
However Sinclair D’Albuquerque, owner of the popular Reuters Bar on Hoghton Street, won’t be completing the full length of the drastically underused cycle lane any time soon.
In a not so subtle dig to both the council and the government who funded the scheme, Sinclair has instead set up a static exercise bike on the route to hammer home his point about how pointless they are.
Sinclair said “during lockdown I’ve put on quite a few pounds so I thought I’d put this ridiculous cycle lane to good use and get on my bike!
“I’ve been keeping an eye out for cyclists using this lane and obviously haven’t seen any because there aren’t any! I’ve been struggling to find any cyclists at all.”
Wearing a full high visibility jacket and helmet, Sinclair recorded himself ‘cycling’ down Hoghton Street before the camera revealed the gag in full.
It follows Sefton Council and the MP for Southport entering a war of words after the latter blamed the authority for poor planning.
However the council have said they were forced into the quick installation by the government due to intense pressures that were placed on them.
