Baroness Williams of Crosby, better known as Shirley Williams, and one of Britain’s best known politicians, is due to visit Southport today, Friday. She is planning to spend a few hours in the town to support John Pugh who is seeking re-election as Lib Dem MP for Southport.
As well as her national reputation, including as one of the four founders of the SDP, Shirley Williams is well known locally for her success in the winning of the Crosby by-election in 1981 for the SDP. In one of the great political upsets of that era she gained the seat, overturning the previous massive Conservative majority of over 19,000 with a 26% swing. Subsequently the SDP and the Liberal Party merged to form the Liberal Democrats.
Commented John Pugh: “I’m naturally delighted that Shirley is able to pay a whistle-stop visit to Southport. As the former MP for Formby and Crosby she knows our town well and we are always delighted to have her support.”
