Globe On Screen gives cinema goers across the UK and beyond a unique opportunity to commemorate the landmark 400 year anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare
Acclaimed performances of Measure For Measure (from 6 May), The Merchant of Venice (from 10 June) and Richard II (from 24 June) filmed on the world’s most famous stage hit cinemas worldwide as part of a major year of celebration of the Bard
Cinema goers across the UK and around the world are invited to celebrate the landmark 400 year anniversary of Shakespeare’s death with a special cinema season of three thrilling productions from the world’s most famous stage – Shakespeare’s Globe.
With each sell-out performance captured in exceptional high definition and with full surround sound, Globe On Screenaudiences will be transported from their local cinema directly into the standing yard of one of the world’s most unique theatres.
Launching the sixth annual season of the hugely popular Globe On Screen is one of the Bard’s lesser-known works Measure For Measure (from 6 May). Boasting a superb cast and marking the final summer production from artistic director Dominic Dromgoole, the play is a wickedly black comedy of secret identities, sexual politics and manipulation. The production features stellar performances from Mariah Gale as Isabella, Dominic Rowan as Duke Vincent and Kurt Egyiawan as Angelo.
Multi Tony and Olivier Award-winning stage and screen star Jonathan Pryce (Game Of Thrones, Wolf Hall) takes the role of enigmatic Shylock alongside his own daughter Phoebe Pryce, playing Jessica, in Jonathan Munby’s moving production of The Merchant of Venice (from 10 June). This iconic tale of the battle between greed and love, paired with Pryce’s memorable interpretation, makes this a must-see.
Simmering with both violence and comedic irony, Simon Godwin’s Richard II (from 24 June) features a tour de force performance from Charles Edwards (Downton Abbey, Philomena) in the title role. A production that delves into the meaning of kingship and the rising powers that can destroy it, the rich colours and lavish costumes of this sumptuous historical masterpiece transfer superbly to the big screen.
Alongside the new Globe On Screen season, Arts Alliance’s sister company, Park Circus will be releasing two classic Shakespeare film adaptations across the UK and Ireland – a one-day Event Cinema release for Richard III on 28 April featuring a post-film discussion with star Ian McKellen and director Richard Loncraine broadcast live from BFI Southbank and a new 4K restoration of Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet from 20 May.
With a year of major events planned across the world to celebrate the life and work of our most famous playwright, 2016 is the perfect time to experience the magic of Shakespeare on the big screen.
