As the borough prepares to welcome thousands of golf fans for the British Masters tournament, a week of golfing activities is taking place at Southport Golf Links and Bootle Golf Course from May 4-12.
The festival is to appeal to both beginners and existing golfers, of all ages and ability, and is supported by the European Tour and former Southport Golf Links junior member, Tommy Fleetwood.
Included in the festival is free junior golf, foot and disc golf, free coaching and a longest putt challenge.
All of this activity will centre on Southport Golf Links but the free junior golf will also run at Bootle Golf Course during the week.
There is also the unique opportunity for individuals to get involved in the lonely hearts golf where golfers can find a partner to play a round with. All the fun competitions will be free to enter and this includes a 3-club challenge with some excellent prizes too.
Mark Shaw, Sefton Council’s Green Sefton manager, said: “As Sefton prepares to welcome thousands of visitors to the British Masters in May, we thought we would celebrate this through our own festival.
“Southport Golf Links will be a hive of activity from May 4-12 and the course, hailed as one of the very best Municipal courses in the country, has helped produce top talent in Tommy Fleetwood, Lee Slattery and Matthew Baldwin.
“All three were members of Park Golf Club who use Southport Municipal as their course in an ongoing partnership with Sefton Council and the trio are supporting our festival as well.
“Through our own festival it’s a chance for anyone interested in the game to get involved no matter how old or your ability. There really is something for everyone with events taking place in Bootle as well.
“We want the British Masters and our own festival to leave a legacy especially amongst younger people, boys and girls, to enjoy this fabulous sport.”
The British Masters hosted by Tommy Fleetwood will mark the European Tour’s first visit to Hillside since 1982 when Tony Jacklin won the Sun Alliance PGA Championship – the precursor to the BMW PGA Championship – beating his fellow Ryder Cup Captain Bernhard Langer in a play-off.
