Sefton to Axe Southport’s Kerbside Recycling

Sefton Council is set to revamp its kerbside recycling offering, taking it in house and bringing an end to the need for residents to use recycling bring banks across the borough.

Since 2009/10, the amount of tonnage of recyclable waste collected at the bring sites has dropped by nearly 60% – yet Sefton is still the best recycling borough in Merseyside.

However, with the falling amount of recyclable waste at these facilities many of the sites have now become dumping grounds for flytipping. The Sefton sites are currently operated by Palm Recycling, and when their recycling contract comes to an end in the summer, they will cease operating. Stickers will be placed on the main recycling bank locations informing residents of this.

Residents are also encouraged to continue to recycle as much waste as possible via the kerbside collections or use the four Household Waste and Recycling Centres strategically positioned across the borough in Southport, Formby, Maghull and Bootle. All of these sites offer a wide range of recycling facilities to compliment the kerbside recycling collections.

Cllr John Fairclough, Cabinet Member Locality Services, said: “Like many local authorities across the country, we are now looking at moving away from bring bank sites as a means of collecting recyclables from householders.

“Not only have we seen a decline in their usage, but we have seen an increase in people using the sites for the wrong reasons – most notably as a dumping ground for other waste.

“In Sefton we have a Carbon Management Plan which has a commitment to reducing resource use, operating costs and environmental impacts.

“Recycling bring sites were introduced historically when kerbside recycling services were in their infancy. We now provide a comprehensive kerbside recycling service to all residents and there is a clear saving in terms of carbon reduction in the removal of the bring site operation.

“Sefton is committed as a Council to invest resources in practical measures which will reduce our carbon footprint and associated costs and will continue to do so.”
