Formby’s Independent Councillors elected on a mandate to protect the green belt are throwing their support behind Frack Free Formby as they present their 3600 strong petition asking for a full ban on hydraulic fracturing in the borough.

Cllr Maria Bennett, who 6 years ago found her self in the same position as the petitioners, but back then presenting a greenbelt petition to the council, was determined that the new group should not face the wall of silence she witnessed which drove her to contest the local elections.  She hopes that all parties will agree show support for her motion and protect their residents for the future.

Cllr Bennett was frustrated at what she was told she had to remove from the motion by Sefton Legal Officers, in order for it to be allowed to go forward to a vote, however she feels that it is stronger than a previous Labour motion submitted while the national party still showed qualified support for fracking.  She hopes the the commitment  to ban fracking in the 2017 Labour manifesto will mean that the ruling Sefton Labour Party will support her motion, which would guarantee its success.
