Sefton Council’s ward boundaries are set to change following recommendations from The Local Government Boundary Commission.
Sefton will retain 66 councillors representing 22 wards, but many of these wards will have new boundaries, and some in the South of the borough will be given new names. Sefton Council’s total boundary and area of jurisdiction will not change.
The Commission is legally required to periodically review ward boundaries across the country. Sefton’s current ward layout was determined in 2003. The recommendations will be laid before Parliament and will come into effect for the 2026 local elections.
The proposed changes attempt to provide “electoral equality” by equalising the number of voters that each councillor represents. The Commission also accounts for the expected population within the next five years.
Southport’s seven wards North of the bypass, Ainsdale, Birkdale, Kew, Meols, Norwood, Cambridge, and Duke’s, will all retain their given names but will have slight boundary changes.
The entirety of Hall Street will be shifted to Duke’s ward, while a number of houses on Haig Avenue that sat in Norwood ward will be moved into Kew.
The Commission rejected a local resident’s suggestion to rename Cambridge Ward to ‘Hesketh Park’ and a suggestion to rename Norwood to ‘High Park’.
In Formby, the names Harington and Ravenmeols will be scrapped and replaced with “Formby West” and “Formby East”.
