Council cash may not build Everton Stadium after all.

Liverpool Labour Mayor Joe Anderson is suddenly hinting for the first time that he may NOT be lending Everton Football Club £280 million of Council funds to build a new Dockside stadium.

In a podcast this week, the ‘True Blue’ Mayor who has been accused of wanting to push the Council into the Red to satisfy his own footie favoritism ,has admitted that Everton may well look elsewhere for the money. -although he still firmly believes the loan would be ‘the right thing to do’.

Whatever the reason, it appears that the Everton loan from public funds is clearly not a ’done deal’

“We are not there yet.” says Joe Anderson, “ because Everton want to make sure that they get the best deal, they are talking to other people.” He plans to get back a £7 million per year payback on the loan from Everton into the Liverpool City coffers from the proposed Bramley Moore Dock development.

”If they want to use us – they may well turn around and say no, but if they want to use us, I think absolutely yes we should.”

Mayor Anderson acknowledges that Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri might also make the club an offer qwhich would thwart his own bid to use council funds.

He said: “I look at his portfolio and he’s got massive interests all over the world, plenty of people in construction, investors who talk to him and deals he does in different countries – I guess these people will be talking to him.”

But the lifelong Everton fan admits that he would be ”hugely disappointed” if the club did go another way when looking for investment.
