Sefton Central Constituency Labour Party members voted overwhelmingly in favour of nominating Rebecca Long-Bailey to be the Labour Party’s new leader.
More than 180 members from throughout Sefton Central attended the packed meeting at Maghull Town Hall.
At the same meeting, members backed Angela Rayner to be the party’s deputy leader.
Sefton Central Constituency Labour Party chair, Andy Wilson, said the evening had been a fascinating and comradely debate.
Andy said: “We had over 180 members from right across our constituency attend the Sefton Central Constituency Labour Party nominating meeting. We heard some very passionate speeches in support of the excellent panel of candidates we have to be the next Labour Party Leader.
“After a brilliant discussion, members in Sefton Central voted to support Rebecca Long-Bailey to be our new leader. Rebecca will be a fantastic leader for our party and the leader we will need to spearhead the Labour fight back across the country.
“Rebecca Long-Bailey is a superb northern MP who has dedicated her life to fighting for working people, for social justice and for making Britain a country for the many.
“I would like to thank all of the members who came along to the meeting and who took part in the debate.
“Rebecca will be the leader our party needs to return Labour to government and to win the next general election.”
Labour Party members will vote for who becomes the party’s next leader in the coming weeks, with the winner being announced on April 4.
