Search begins to find family of war memorial soldiers

27th June 2019

A railway operator is searching for the families of three soldiers from Southport whose names appear on a long-lost war memorial which has been ‘lovingly restored’

Northern rail wants to invite them to the official unveiling of the memorial later this month at New- ton Heath train maintenance depot.

The company wants to trace the relatives of 116 railway workers from across the country who made the supreme sacrifice during the First World War, and whose names are carefully listed on the monument which will be re-housed at Newton Heath on Friday, June 28.

Those based at Southport Railway Station are named on the memoiral list as:’ J. Aughton of the 6th Royal I’ (believed to stand for Infantry); ‘L/Cpl T. Marsden of the 17th King’s L’pool’ (believed to be Regiment); ‘W.E. Rimmer of the 2nd Middlesex’ (believed to be Regiment)’.
