Scarisbrick Swords Hold Inaugural Summer Tournament

8th July 2019

Scarisbrick Swords held their inaugural summer tournament on Saturday 6th July in the beautiful setting of Scarisbrick Hall. It was planned to be one of the very few open-air fencing tournaments held in the UK. At first it fell victim to the changeable weather with the initial rounds were forced indoors on hastily organised pistes in the school dining room! However, by mid-morning the ground had dried and the sun was shining and the fencing could be moved back outside.

The tournament consisted of three events. They were for the adults, primary and secondary aged children. In addition to the usual first, second and third place medals, awards were also given to the highest placed novice, veteran (in the adults) and girl/lady. The three events produced some excellent fencing and congratulations go to this years medalists.

Primary event: Michael Neophytou (1), Katy Hawthorne (2, novice, girls), William Devers (3) and Edward Neophytou (3)

Secondary event: Grace Michell (1, girls), Henry Parkinson (2, novice), Harry Marsden (3) and Nayan Biswas (3)

Senior event: Richard Michell (1), Aiden Ledson (2), Sam Bleasdale (3), Ben Croxford (3, veteran and novice) and Grace Michell (ladies)

The club would like to thank Scarisbrick Hall School for hosting the competition, the referees and officials who gave up their Saturday to make this possible and photographer Nick Hilton from Southport Photographic Society who has produced some stunning pictures of the action.

Scarisbrick Swords is a not-for-profit community sports club governed by a constitution. It aims to promote the sport of fencing, particularly for young people, in Southport and the surrounding area and to use fencing to improve the health and well-being of all its members.

The club meets on Thursday evenings at 7pm at Scarisbrick Hall and, if you would like to try fencing for yourself, a taster session can be arranged by contacting them by email through info@scarisbrickswords.co.uk, on Facebook
